The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, a remarkable example of French Gothic Revival style, is the fifth largest cathedral in North America. Breaking ground in January 1898, the Cathedral was completed 95 years later. The dedication on October 19,1954. Located on Newark’s highest peak adjacent to Branch Brook Park. Occupying a 45,000-square-foot area, it is comparable in size to Westminster Abbey. The three rose windows are considered among the world’s finest, second only to Chartres Cathedral in France. Situated above the main entrance. Measuring 36’ in diameter, is the largest rose window of its kind in a Catholic Church the Western Hemisphere. The Gallery and Chancel organs of the Cathedral Basilica were installed in 1955-1965 by the Shantz Organ Company. They contain 154 ranks, 193 stops, and 9’513 pipes. The organ support weekly worship, special religious ceremonies, and can be heard as solo instruments or in concert. The Cathedral Basilica series runs from September through April.
