Welcome!
Whatever brought you here on your journey, welcome home!
Welcome to the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the seat of the Archbishop of Newark and the Mother Church of the Archdiocese of Newark. Rising above the city of Newark, our Cathedral stands as a place of prayer, beauty, hope, and encounter — a sacred space where countless people come seeking peace, healing, inspiration, and a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.
As the Mother Church of the Archdiocese, the Cathedral Basilica holds a unique role in the life of our local Church. Here, Cardinal Joseph Tobin gathers the faithful for some of the most important liturgical celebrations of the year, including the Sacred Triduum, the Chrism Mass, ordinations to the priesthood and diaconate, and other celebrations that unite Catholics from throughout northern New Jersey.
Yet the Cathedral is more than a place for noble liturgies and historic moments. It is also the home of a vibrant and welcoming parish community — a family of faith made up of people from many backgrounds and walks of life who gather here each week to worship, serve, learn, and grow together in the love of Christ. Whether attending Mass, receiving the sacraments, visiting in prayer, serving those in need, or simply stepping inside to rest in God’s presence, all are welcome here.
The Cathedral Basilica is also a beacon in the heart of the city — a place where beauty evangelizes, where sacred music lifts the soul, and where the mercy of God is encountered in a real and personal way. We strive to be a community rooted in the Gospel, committed to prayer, hospitality, outreach, and the transformative power of faith.
Whether you are a lifelong Catholic, returning to the Church after many years, visiting Newark, or simply searching for meaning and hope, know that there is a place for you here.
On behalf of our clergy, staff, and parish family, I warmly welcome you to the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. I invite you to join us for Mass, prayer, service, and community life as together we seek to live ever more deeply in the Heart of Christ.
In the Heart of the Savior,
Rev. Matthew Gonzalez
Rector
